우리 시대의 역설

We have taller buildings, but shorter tempers;
Wider freeways, but narrower viewpoints;
We spend more, but have little;
We buy more and enjoy it less.

우리는 더 높은 빌딩들을 가지고 있으나, 더욱 성미는 급해지고;
더 넓은 고속도로를 가지고 있으나, 더욱 좁아터진 견해를 가지고;
더 많이 소비하나, 아무것도 갖지 못하며;
더 많이 구입하고 덜 즐긴다.

We have bigger houses and smaller families;
More conveniences, but less time;
We have more degrees, but less common sense;
More knowledge, but less judgement;
More experts, but more problems;
More medicine, but less wellness.

우리는 더 큰 집을 소유하고 더 적은 가족을 가지며;
더 편리해졌으나, 여유는 더  없으며;
학위는 가지고 있으나, 분별력은 더 부족하며;
더 많은 지식을 가지고 있으나. 판단력은 더 미흡하며;
더 많은 전문가들이 있음에도, 더 많은 문제들이 생기고;
더 많은 약이 있음에도, 건강 상태는 더 좋지 않다.

We spend too recklessly, laugh too little,
Drive too fast, get too angry too quickly,
Stay up too late, get up too tired, Read too seldom,
Watch TV too much, and don't pray often enough.

우리는 너무 무모하게 시간을 보내고, 잘 웃지도 않으며,
너무 빨리 운전하고, 너무 쉽게 화를 내며,
너무 늦게 자고, 너무 피곤한 상태로 일어나고, 거의 독서를 하지 않으며,
TV를 너무 많이 보고, 기도를 잘 하지 않는다.

We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values.
We talk too much, love too seldom and lie too often.
We've learned how to make a living, but not a life;
We've added years to life, not life to years.

우리는 소유물을 엄청 늘리지만, 우리 자신의 가치는 줄인다.
우리는 너무 많은 말을 하고, 사랑하지 않으며, 너무 자주 거짓말을 한다.
우리는 생계를 꾸려가는 법은 배우지만, 삶을 살아가는 법을 배우지는 않고;
우리는 몇 년을 더 살려고 하나, 삶의 의미를 생각지는 않는다.

We've been all the way to the moon and back,
But have trouble crossing the street to meet the new neighbor.

우리는 달을 다녀왔지만,
새로운 이웃을 만나기 위해 길을 건너는데 어려움을 겪는다.

We've conquered outer space, but not inner space;
We've done larger things, but not better things;
We've cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul;
We've split the atom, but not our prejudice;
We write more, but learn less.

우리는 외부의 공간을 정복했으나, 내면을 정복하지는 못했으며;
더 거대한 일들을 하나, 더 좋은 일을 하지는 않으며;
공기는 정화시키려 하지만, 영혼을 오염시키며;
원자를 쪼갤 수 있으나, 편견을 쪼개지는 못한다;
우리는 더 많이 쓰지만, 적게 배운다.

We have higher incomes, but lower morals;
More food but less appeasement;
More acquaintances, but fewer friends;
More effort but less success.

우리는 성급히 달리는 것을 배우지만, 기다리는 걸 배우지 않으며;
우리는 더 많은 수입에도, 도덕은 추락하며;
더 풍족한 음식에도 덜 양보하며;
아는 사람은 많으나, 친구들은 더 적으며;
더 많은 노력에도 성공의 기회는 더 줄어든다.

We build better computers to hold more information,
Produce more copies than ever, yet have less communication;
We've become long on quantity, but short on quality.
These are the times of fast foods and upset stomachs;
More kinds of food, but less nutrition.

우리는 더 많은 정보를 갖기 위해 더 좋은 컴퓨터를 만든다,
유례없이 많은 복사본들을 생산하지만, 소통은 줄어들고;
양적으로는 풍족하지만, 질적으로는 떨어지고 있다.
이 시대는 패스트 푸드와 메스꺼운 위의 시대이다;
더 많은 종류의 음식이 넘쳐나지만, 영양은 줄어든다.

These are the times of world peace, but domestic warfare;
More leisure and less fun;

세계 평화의 시대이지만, 국지전은 사라지지 않고;
더 많은 여가와 더 작아지는 재미;

These are the days of two incomes, but more divorce;
Of fancier houses, but broken homes;
Tall men and short character;
Steep profits, and shallow relationships.

맞벌이 수입의 시대이지만, 이혼은 더 늘어만 가고;
더 멋진 집을 소유하지만, 가정은 풍지박산이 나고;
키큰 사람들과 더욱 혐소해진 성격;
수익은 많으나, 얕아진 관계들.

These are days of quick trips, throwaway morality,
One-night stands, and pills that do everything from
Cheer, to quiet, to kill.

이시대는 여유없는 여행, 일회용 도덕
하룻밤 즐기기와, 기운을 돋구는 것에서부터, 침묵케하고,
죽음에 이르게 까지 하는 모든 것들을 가능케 하는 알약들의 시대.

It is a time when there is much in the show window,
And nothing in the stockroom.

진열장에는 많은 것들이 진열되어 있으나 ,
창고는 텅빈 그런 때이다.
